Menstrual problems mainly include various disorders like amenorrhea, menorrhagia, dysmenorrhea, (all related to irregular menstrual periods), premenstrual syndrome, endometriosis etc.

Ancient classical texts of Ayurveda have mentioned a vast number of drugs which helps in curing the menstrual disorders and is beneficial for the reproductive system. Such herbs facilitate the health of the reproductive system right from menarche to menopause.
By having a healthy reproductive system one can lead a healthy life, free from complications and beget a healthy child.

Ayurveda has a special branch of gynecological medicine for treatment of the diseases of the female reproductive system. These diseases are primarily reflected in menstrual disorders. They often result from hormonal imbalances that derange the menstrual cycle.

The menstrual cycle is a good key to the health of the female. It can also be used to determine the Ayurvedic Constitution with Vata, Pitta and Kapha having their unique menstrual patterns. Regular menstruation, absence of pain or tension, smooth flow and balanced emotions are signs of good health. However, most women suffer some difficulties with menstruation at one time of life or another, as part of the normal changes that life brings us.

Determination of constitution according to Menstruation:

Vata constitution women generally have a scanty menstrual flow. The blood is darkish red or brownish and it is usually a little dry or old. Menstrual cramping may be severe with lower back pain. Feelings of depression and nervous sensitivity may increase, with fear and anxiety, difficult sleep or insomnia. There will be lessening of vitality and resistance may be lowered. Constipation, gas or abdominal distension may occur. Periods are short, irregular or variable, lasting only 2-4 days.

Pitta type women usually have an excess menstrual flow because of Pitta's association with blood. The blood color is dark red while the flow is profuse and warm, with possible clotting. There may be fever or burning sensation with flushed face or red eyes. Skin rashes or acne are possible. Emotional states include anger, irritability and short temper. Diarrhea or loose stool of predominantly yellow color may occur. Periods are typically of medium duration and sometimes much heavier.

Kapha women exhibit a moderate flow, but the period will last longer, a week or more. The blood will be pale or light red with possible mucus and the flow will be continuous. There will be feelings of heaviness and tiredness with a desire to sleep. Some nausea or vomiting with mucus and saliva is possible. There may be edema, particularly in the lower legs.

Dual types will show a combination of the Doshas. The menstrual flow can be disturbed by many factors. These include poor diet, stress and overwork. Excessive physical exercise, particularly too much aerobic exercise, can interfere with the period. That doesn't mean exercise should be avoided. Exercise is must but not advisable during menstrual period. Our modern cultural emphasis on thin bodies is also a factor. Without adequate fat, the body cannot produce enough blood for easy menstruation. A premenstrual regimen of quiet and rest should be followed, avoiding any strong exercise. (Mild Yogasanas are good, however).

Herbs and Herbal products useful in Menstrual disorders:

Mild menstrual difficulties are treated with the same therapies as those for balancing the woman's predominant dosha. Most gynecological disorders involve a delay or difficulty in menstruation. Therapies to promote and regulate menstruation are usually indicated with the use of emmanagogue (menstruation-promoting) herbs like turmeric and saffron. Antispasmodics and Nervines are helpful such as fennel, asafetida, jatamamsi or valerian. Special tonics for the reproductive system are important when there is debility.

As blood loss frequently involves a weakening of vitality, herbal tonics are important supplements for the majority of women.

Female health support is useful in treating all types of menstrual disorders and regulating the menstrual flow. It helps in relieving the symptoms or complications during menstruation and serves as a Tonic for the Female Health.

Pradarantak Churna is beneficial for the normal menstrual flow. It contains natural herbs that are useful in regulating the menstruation and to have a normal menstrual flow. It also helps in preventing the discharges of clots during the period.

Chanderprabha Vati is an excellent remedy for female health. It is useful in balancing the hormonal levels. It serves various purposes and supports the female reproductive system. It is also useful in treating obesity and removes the unwanted fats from the body.

Shatavari is the main Ayurvedic female reproductive tonic. It is highly nourishing, soothing and moistening and calms the heart. Amalaki is also excellent, building all the tissues and calming Pitta as well.

Kumari Saar is very helpful and balanced in its action, cleansing as well as nourishing the female organs.

It should be noted that excess use of strong emmanagogue herbs like pennyroyal, tansy can derange menstruation or cause excessive menstrual bleeding. This type of herb is contraindicated especially during pregnancy. They are sometimes used to help promote abortions but seldom work and can cause many side effects.

One of the main therapeutic actions of spicy or pungent taste is to move stagnation and increase the circulation of blood. Many common spices promote menstruation and have antispasmodic properties as well. Turmeric is the best general spice, but many others are good - cinnamon, ginger, cayenne, black pepper, basil, fennel, cardamom and asafetida.
