Menopause, the change of life in women, can be a time of health disturbances with the shifting of hormones. Treatment requires special herbs for strengthening and rejuvenating the female reproductive system along with herbs to regulate the hormones and calm the emotions. As menopause is associated with the movement into old age, the Vata stage of life, symptoms are primarily of high Vata with increased nervousness, anxiety, insomnia and depression. But Pitta is usually involved as well, owing to the decreasing Kapha or secretions in the body.
The general treatment is anti-Vata herbs that tonify the female reproductive system. They are Crucial, including Kumari Saar, Shatavari, Kapikachu, and Ashwagandha taken along with milk or any other forms.
Kumari Saar is especially useful for maintaining the youthfulness of female reproductive organs. It is particularly effective for night sweats and sensitivity to heat. Brahmi Chyawanprash can also be taken which has a general rejuvenative effect. Shatavari maintains nourishment to the female organs and moistens the mucus membranes and the skin. Sandalwood oil applied to the forehead helps with the night sweats as well.
Pitta type menopause appears as anger, irritability and short temper with frequent or pronounced hot flashes. Treatment is anti-Pitta including Kumari Saar and Shatavari and saffron milk decoction.
Kapha type involves feelings of heaviness, sleepiness, lack of motivation, weight gain or holding of water. Treatment is anti-Kapha. Hot spices are used like the Trikatu formula along with aloe gel. Myrrh is also excellent, as is saffron.
